Why are my ankles and legs swollen?

What many people think

Many people think of poor circulation, hot weather or the kidneys. Sometimes that is the cause.

Why it may be related to the heart

When swelling gets worse at the end of the day and comes with tiredness or shortness of breath, it may be related to the heart: if it pumps less strongly, fluid builds up in the legs (heart failure).

When to see a cardiologist

If the swelling is new, affects both legs, leaves a dent when you press it, or comes with shortness of breath or tiredness.

Tests usually ordered

  • Echocardiogram
  • Blood tests

Frequently asked questions

Is leg swelling always caused by the heart?

No. It has many possible causes, such as varicose veins, heat, medicines or the kidneys. That is why a doctor should check it.
