Can some medicines affect the heart?

Yes. Some medicines, even over-the-counter ones, can affect blood pressure, heart rhythm or fluid retention.

Tell your cardiologist everything

  • Medicines prescribed by other doctors
  • Pain relievers and anti-inflammatories
  • Over-the-counter medicines (for flu, colds or sleep)
  • Supplements, vitamins and herbal teas

Bring the list or the boxes to your visit.

Never stop a medicine on your own

Even if you read that a medicine may affect the heart, do not stop it or change the dose without talking to your doctor first: stopping suddenly can be riskier.

This does not replace a medical visit. If these symptoms sound familiar, see a cardiologist.
